Understanding Botox Treatments

What Is Botox?

Botox is a cosmetic treatment that uses botulinum toxin A to temporarily weaken or paralyze muscles by blocking signals from the nerves that control them. Botox is administered using injections that target precise muscle groups to achieve the desired effect.

The Benefits of Botox: How Botox Is Used in Dentistry

Botox relaxes targeted groups of muscles, and this can deliver a variety of benefits. As a result, Botox treatments have a wide array of applications in dentistry.

  • Cosmetic Enhancement - As Botox temporarily relaxes groups of facial muscles, it is popularly used to soften the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
  • Gummy Smile - Also called "excessive gingival display," a gummy smile can be addressed by using Botox to relax the facial muscles that pull the upper lip higher than desired. As a result, a patient can still smile, but less of the upper gum line shows when smiling.
  • Bruxism - Patients who clench their jawbones together or grind their teeth can benefit from Botox injections in the muscle groups that control jaw movement. Relaxing key muscles in these areas can provide relief from bruxism-caused pain and help prevent excessive wear and tear of tooth enamel.
  • Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) - Additionally, depending on the underlying cause, Botox injections can help alleviate the painful symptoms associated with certain types of TMD.
  • Adjusting to Dentures - New denture wearers undergo a period of initial adjustment when their facial muscles get used to wearing, using, and controlling dentures. Strategically placed Botox injections can help alleviate discomfort and muscle tension, making the adjustment period much more pleasant.
  • Reducing Facial Pain - Patients who experience facial pain as a result of chronic muscle tension or muscle spasms can find relief with Botox.

What to Expect During Botox Treatments

Every treatment at Bloomsburg Family Dentistry begins with a patient consultation where we discuss your concerns and treatment goals, answer your questions, and provide you with personalized treatment recommendations. We can then work with you to determine the best treatment plan to meet your needs and help you achieve your goals.

We always prioritize our patients' comfort and safety. So we follow all of the required and recommended protocols for Botox injections. We begin by sterilizing the injection site. Depending on the location of your injections, we will likely use a topical numbing agent to improve your comfort during your treatment. We then use a very fine needle to inject Botox into the targeted muscle groups.

The Botox treatment process usually only requires about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on your treatment plan.

What to Expect After Botox Treatments

Patients might notice small bumps, redness, slight bruising, or swelling at the injection site. These side effects are usually fairly mild and do not last long.

The full effects of Botox treatments usually become apparent within 10 to 14 days of treatment, as the agents have time to take full effect and as wrinkles have a chance to relax.

We typically schedule patients for a follow-up appointment to assess their treatment results and address any concerns.

How Long Do the Effects of Botox Treatment Last?

Botox is not a permanent treatment. Over time, the body naturally clears the botulinum toxin, restoring full muscle function. On average, the effects of Botox injections last between three and six months, but they can wear off sooner or later depending on each person's unique biology.

Once the effects have worn off, we can help patients determine a regular schedule of treatments that will most effectively achieve their goals.

Understanding Dermal Fillers

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that are injected beneath the skin to help restore diminished volume in the face, while smoothing wrinkles and enhancing facial features. The specific ingredients in a dermal filler depend on the type of filler you are receiving. Sometimes they contain hyaluronic acid or other biocompatible materials such as calcium hydroxyapatite or polylactic acid.

The Benefits of Dermal Fillers: How We Use Dermal Fillers in Our Office

Dermal fillers are primarily a cosmetic treatment used for aesthetic purposes. They can rejuvenate the face and take years off a person's appearance by addressing the following concerns:

  • Fine Lines and Wrinkles - Dermal fillers are often injected to smooth out wrinkles and fine lines such as smile lines, frown lines, elevens, and crow's feet.
  • Diminished Volume - People naturally lose facial volume and plumpness with age, and dermal fillers are used to restore fullness to areas like the temples, cheeks, and lips.
  • Assymetry - Dermal fillers can be used to improve facial balance and symmetry with strategic augmentation and shape manipulation.

Additionally, dermal fillers can be used to enhance a person's natural facial features with:

  • Contouring - Adding strategically placed volume to the cheekbones, chin, or jawline.
  • Augmentation - Injecting fillers to add volume, enhance shape, and improve the appearance of features such as the lips.

What to Expect During Treatment With Dermal Fillers

As with Botox, treatment with dermal fillers begins with a patient consultation and the development of a personalized treatment plan. The treatment process begins with sterilizing the injection site and applying a numbing agent. We then inject the dermal filler with a very fine needle, making the procedure minimally invasive.

Depending on the type of dermal filler treatment, the process can take anywhere from a few minutes to about an hour for completion.

What to Expect After Treatment With Dermal Fillers

Patients sometimes experience some mild redness, swelling, and tenderness at the location of the injections. They may also experience some minor bruising. As these side effects subside, patients begin to see the full effects of their treatments after about two weeks.

We will schedule you for a follow-up appointment to assess your treatment results and address any concerns you might have.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

The exact lifespan of dermal fillers can vary significantly depending on the type of filler used, its thickness, the injection technique and location, and the individual's metabolism, skin care routine, and lifestyle. On average, the effects of dermal fillers last anywhere from six months to two years before a patient might request maintenance treatments.
